Answers to common questions about UPF ratings, classification, Tours, sanctioned events and independent league participation.
Is UPF a league?
No. UPF is the federation layer. United Pool Leagues is a directly affiliated league program, and independent leagues can also participate through UPF sanctioning.
Do I need FargoRate to get a UPF Rating?
No. FargoRate is one useful evidence source. UPF can also consider APA, TAP, Digital Pool results, tournament history and other credible competitive records.
Does UPF simply convert my outside rating?
No. Outside evidence establishes a provisional starting estimate. Source reliability, match volume, recency and verification matter. UPF-native results progressively become the primary authority.
Why can my UPF Rating differ from another system?
Different systems use different data and methodologies. UPF is based on the competition recorded within its federation plus approved outside evidence used for initial placement and review.
What is the difference between Rating and Class?
Rating is a continuous estimate of ability. Class is the competitive eligibility band built from that rating and the confidence behind it.
Can I choose to play in a lower or higher class?
Class-locked events use verified UPF classification. Open and Combined events can intentionally include multiple levels under their published format.
What are Tour Points?
Tour Points measure sanctioned accomplishment, not ability. Rating gets you to the appropriate level; event performance builds Tour standing and championship qualification.
Do league matches count?
UPL and approved sanctioned league scoresheets can feed rated results directly to UPF when the match meets the Rated Competition Standard.
Can an independent league join without changing its name?
Yes. UPF sanctioning is designed to preserve local ownership, branding and administration while connecting players to federation identity and opportunity.
Can a local tournament count toward UPF?
Yes, when the event is properly sanctioned and follows the applicable registration, eligibility, scoring and reporting standards.
Where does championship money come from?
UPF championships can combine entries, approved membership/sanctioning allocations, disclosed Tour contributions, sponsors and federation-added money.
Can a director manually change my rating?
No. Directors report competition. Rating changes come from verified competitive observations or a documented federation review/correction process.
