UPF classification converts a player’s current verified ability into an earned eligibility level for sanctioned competition.
Rating and Classification Are Different
The UPF Rating is a continuous measure of playing ability. Competitive Class is an eligibility band built from that rating and the federation’s confidence in it. A player’s rating can move continuously while classification changes are managed deliberately.
Class-Locked Eligibility
Class-sanctioned events use verified UPF classification. Players do not choose a lower class for an easier field or a higher class for a favorable handicap. Open and Combined events are separately defined when mixed classifications are part of the intended format.
Promotion Is Earned
Promotion occurs when sufficient evidence shows that a player has established the ability required for the next competitive level. Promotion opens access to stronger fields, higher-level Tours, more prestigious titles and greater prize opportunities. Previous class accomplishments remain part of the player’s permanent history.
Rating Confidence Matters
A rating near a class boundary does not automatically cause constant movement between classes. UPF considers rating confidence, observation volume and sustained performance before changing competitive eligibility.
Provisional Players
Provisional players can participate only under the eligibility rules established for the event. When the federation lacks enough reliable data, UPF can require additional evidence, assign a conservative provisional placement, or restrict entry until classification is sufficiently reliable.
Inactivity and Returning Players
Long periods without current competitive evidence can increase uncertainty without erasing the player’s established history. Returning players may remain historically established while receiving a current-rating review or temporary confidence adjustment until new observations confirm present ability.
Review and Reclassification
UPF can review a classification when native performance materially conflicts with the current rating, credible outside evidence is disclosed, significant data corrections occur, or competitive-integrity concerns arise. Reviews preserve the underlying evidence and decision history.
Competitive Résumé
A player’s profile preserves class progression over time. A player can therefore show not only a current rating and class, but the path used to reach that level, including prior Tours, promotions, championships and meaningful rating milestones.
UPF principle: Classification is earned eligibility, not a handicap label.
